Bible Contradictions: Higher or Lower Than The Angels?

Was Jesus made higher or lower than the angels? The critics have found it to be both but does this interpretation hold?

Hebrews 1:4 says in regards to Jesus’ position in comparison to angels,

“Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.”

This is seen to contradict a verse in chapter 2 verse nine that says,

“But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death….” (emphasis mine).

So are better and lower contrary to each other? I can’t see how so, considering the Hebrew words used for better (kreiton) and lower (elattoo) in this context mean completely different things.

Better here means more useful, important, or excellent while lower means lesser in dignity or status. In harmonizing these verses we can see Jesus did more than the angels could ever do by brokering the New Covenant and providing salvation, but He was made a servant to all below the status and dignity of the heavenly beings by representing us on the cross.
